Council approves two Levy Propositions for August 2015 ballot

The City Council approved two Propositions to be placed on the August, 2015 ballot as summarized below:   How are you going to vote?  It is estimated the levy would cost $154 per year on a house appraised at $500,000.

Based on discussions to date, the first proposition (Proposition No. 1) will continue the

support for the 2007 levy lid lift which increased firefighters and police personnel to

provide additional emergency services, maintain the school resource officer program and

fund additional patrol. In addition, the new levy will add Police funding to reduce

property crime, increase patrol, and augment evidence processing capabilities. The new

public safety levy would also include transportation safety and maintenance programs by

investing in asphalt maintenance, sidewalks, crosswalks, and safe pedestrian crossings.

Proposition No. 2 is focused on park maintenance and operations and investing in

Idylwood, Southeast, and Northeast neighborhood parks. This proposition also continues

the programs supported by the 2007 levy by maintaining funding for park operations, the

teen center, conservation activities, and after school programs.

  1. Seems like the more money that is spent on traffic, the worse it gets. The crazy 4-to-3 lane conversion on 166th Avenue NE cost $1.9 million and created gridlock. Cleveland Street - the new "Main Street" - is scary to drive on and they want to make it a 2-way street?!?!?

There are now at least 8 blinking lights on NE 104th Street in front of the schools. Do they even help? Nobody can drive faster than 8 mph when schools are letting out and cars are swarming to get in and out of the parking lots. I've lived here 20 years and I can't think of anyone getting hit by a car on 104th. The city spent a fortune on these "safety lights" and now they want more money?

Rather than spending more money for police, maybe the city should reassign the motorcycle cops who sit at the schools and wait for minor infractions (and then block traffic while they pull people over.) Everyone resents this!!!! They would be more useful on some other patrol or for evidence processing.

On the other hand -Yes - I will vote for parks! I love the parks! I wish Hartman Park had a year-round coffee shop.

  2. I agree with your safety proposition concerns. And now the county will have a safety proposition on the ballot this Spring. Don't forget the LWSD will be asking for bond money come next year. We taxpayers are under a lot of pressure from our local governments. In aggregate we have some tough decisions.
